Tooth Reshaping: A Simple Solution To Over-Crowding

Dental Work, Reshaping Teeth, South Charlotte Dentistry, Dentist Office, Charlotte Dentist

At South Charlotte Dentistry, our goal is to provide patients with the best possible dental care. A technique that is popular among orthodontists is tooth reshaping or Interproximal Reduction. Tooth reshaping is when some of the enamel of a tooth is removed to make more space in your mouth. This technique has been used since the 1940s to help with crowding and alignment issues in the mouth.

There are many reasons that may suggest reshaping your teeth. A common reason is to correcting a Bolton Discrepancy, which is when the upper teeth and the lower teeth are different sizes. Small reductions can be made to maintain balance within your mouth. The most likely reason tooth reshaping may be recommended is to relieve crowding. When your mouth is over-crowded, it can be difficult and painful to re-arrange the teeth. By removing some of the tooth enamel, your orthodontist can create more space within the mouth to rotate and move the teeth into better alignment.

If you are wondering how tooth reshaping works, don’t worry: it is actually a pretty simple process. First, your orthodontist will identify the teeth that will be reduced. Then, using a dental tool specially designed for Interproximal Reduction, your doctor will remove enamel from the sides of each tooth. The enamel is removed where teeth come in contact with each other. After creating the needed space in your mouth, the doctor can then proceed with positioning the teeth in a way that the bite is improved and the alignment looks good.

You may be wondering if reshaping your teeth will harm your teeth in the long run. However, there is nothing to fear. Studies have shown that tooth reshaping does not make your teeth more likely to suffer from tooth decay. The procedure also does not increase the risk of gum disease, so you have nothing to worry about.

If you are ready to take a step towards a better smile, schedule an appointment at our website or give us a call at 704-759-0908 to see if tooth reshaping is the right option for you.
